day two: amsterdam.
the melkweg was about twice as small as the bataclan, but it was packed. As
walt had said the day before, they put rachid and i on the guest list.
it's cool because i spent that money on merchandise going directly into the
band's pocket (or angelo in fact, only maddvibe merchandise available).
apparently the ska revival thing is finally hitting europe, because the
selecter had quite a success opening. angelo enjoyed it fully from the
floor. imo, it was a bit weak. I think that more people came for the
selecter than for fishbone, even though no one left before the end (1 am).
here, the audience was a lot more quiet than in paris, no diving, no
swimming altough security was inexistant and the stage about as high.
funny. i thought it would have been the other way around. this led to a
very cool and funk oriented set. even though the list was about the same
(they played longer), it was one big jam. some very good versions that i
had never heard. i'll have to check the recording to be more specific.
for me, this was their best.

I went over from London to the Amsterdamnnnn! gig with a couple of old school friends. What a show. Hadn't seen them for a while, last time they played in London was on the 'Give a monkey a brain' tour with support from Bad Brains. Anyway, they seemed to warm up after the first half-hour (probably something to do with all that weed) and Angelo looked smooth with his bright pink bowler hat. First time that I'd seen the new line-up and they were tight, turning the show into a warm vibe ska fest. I left a few flyers for the club night I run in London on the stage while they were playin and on the Madd Vibe stall in the foyer. Wanted to get catch Angelo after the show to ask him about DJ-ing when they next come to London (supposedly December) but didn't manage it. Shit! If anyone knows a contact for them, swing it my way. Damn, I would have liked to have hooked up with you people at the show, only just checking my messages now after being away for a while.

Rich.
