Hey Mega - It was cool to meet you too. I was happy to meet somebody
from the list last night. Poor attendance to say the least. I am
sad to say that Nashville is a town of no-shows. Anyway, Fishbone
tore it up. It was an all ages show (which might have added to the
low attendace) and there was no bar. The only good thing about that,
was I remember most of the set-list. Not in this order, but: Party
at ground zero, Skankin' to the beat, Cholly, Ma and Pa, Deep Inside,
Housework, Everyday Sunshine, Behavior Control Tech, Servitude,
Alcoholic, Shakey Ground, The Suffering, Pants, Just Allow, Aids and
Armageddon, Karma Tsunami, One Planet People, and that's all I can
remember. In the middle of the set, Angelo says "I was just informed
that some greasy, fat long-haired mutherfucker came over to the board
and turned down the monitors. I can't hear what I'm doing when that
shit is turned down. If you have a problem with mutherfuckin'
Fishbone, you can come up and see me about it right now. Where the
fuck are you?". I noticed later that the fat greasy long-haired
mutherfucker was probably "housemanager" or something for the club.
Angelo was so pissed. They ended their set with Alcoholic, and went
backstage. Every show I have ever seen, always ends with an encore.
I have seen countles bands at this very club, all with an encore. So
the house lights turn up and there is nothing but white lights
throughout the place. Everybody starts leaving! Weird. About 20
people stayed and kept screaming for Fishbone, and they finally start
coming back out. The "house/stage manager" comes on stage and
says "no more" to Angelo and wavung his hands. Angelo looks at
Norwwod and asks about Servitude and they start that as an Encore.
The PA is then turned off as well as the lights. They were fuckin'
playing in thge dark. Angelo didn't even move. He just stood there
and sang and looked pissed. The lights kept going on and off, and
then One by one all of Fishbone just left the stage. Here's the
thing though, I bet Fishbone will never play Nashville again. At
least not that club. So what the fuck. I was tempted to go to some
kind of club manager and ask for my money back, because I have never
been to a show that was stoped by the house before it was over. I
wonder if they have an Email address. We could all flame the shit
out of that club for cutting off Fishbone. I will look later today
if there is or not. It was at 328 performance hall. anyway, I don't
want to sound like I am complaining but the whole scene kinda ruined
the "one love" vibe goin'. One more thing. Fishbone is probably the
best live band there has ever been. Out.
Sword-
This was my 2nd Fishbone show. My first show was in May of '96 in Birmingham, AL, right before they released Chim Chim's Badass Revenge. So, I never got to see Chris Dowd or Kendall Jones since they had split by that time. I only got to see Fish & John Bigham the one time in Birmingham and I hate that b/c I'm a big fan of Fish and his drumming. Anyway, before they started this show I saw John Steward standing toward the back of the big room. I recognized him from the pics in the liner notes of the Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx cd. I went up to him and wished him a "good gig" and I think I may have said something about how he had some big shoes to fill. In hindsight I hope I didn't come across as rude, like, "So, new drummer. Are you gonna be able to nail those beats in Servitude, Alcoholic, Rockstar, etc." I don't think I came across like that. I can't help it if Fish rocks.
As for the show, they busted into Party At Ground Zero, which I had never heard them play since this was just the 2nd time for me. It was like I had been waiting forever to hear them play that song. Well, I had been waiting almost 12 yrs, considering I was turned onto Fishbone in late '88/early '89. I was right in front of Norwood. It was great! I really liked Spacey-T's vibe. He used a lot of effects which I liked. John McKnight held down the keys, the trombone, and I think he even played a little guitar. Most of the time I just kept my eyes on Steward. Being a drummer myself, I have a tendency to watch the drummer a lot, but at a Fishbone show it's hard not to focus on Angelo. I spoke to Angelo during the break or maybe it was before the show. He was wearing this super-cool black denim jacket with the Truth And Soul logo on the back. It may have been after the gig because I remember him telling me, "Man, you knew all the licks!" I'm pretty sure he was referring to my air-drumming, singing, and cuing all the horn parts. I get a little carried away. What can I say?
I could write 10 pages on just this one show, but I'll wrap it up because I've got a couple more reviews to write. Why? Because I've seen them three times since this show. Keep up the jams fellas!!
Setlist
Great song to kick off the show.
I remember Walt asking if the audience liked Temptations.
They came back out and asked what song we wanted to hear!
Shoutout to sword fish, nice meeting you tonight. You gotta tell me what songs were played before one planet people because I missed some of them. Fishbone finished tonight at 11:30 which is when I figured they'd START!
I went last night in Cincinnati too. I was on the street team for both shows, but the mail delivery didn't get my the material until today so the Cinci show didn't get done. Both shows had very poor attendance and I'm afraid some money was lost - especially the Cicni show considering there were four bands. Ok, before I crashout, the notable stuff quickly: I finally got to hear Servitude tonight. Unfortunately the club cut the main speakers to try to get Fishbone off stage, so the monitor-only sound was terrible with really weak guitar. Spacey's solo on it was really really creative. Dang, I'm too tired from traveling for whatever else I wanted to add.
