My girlfriend and I arrived at the Roseland Theatre a little
after 9pm. We made good time considering we were driving up
from Eugene which is about 2 hours south of Portland (PDX). I
ran into Matt, AKA DJ Simmerdown, who runs Simmerdown Productions
in PDX. He mentioned that he probably wasn't going to run into
the person he was hoping to meet, so he gave me a promo for
his band Franceska. There is 5 songs on this album, three
versions of one song and four others. Angelo appears on the
three versions of the first song and on the second song.
We arrived halfway thru the first band's set. The band was called
The Chosen. I wasn't impressed with these guys at all. They were
a hip hop group. The music wasn't bad, but you couldn't hear the
guys rapping at all.
The second band to hit the stage was Los Mex Pistols Del Norte.
Los Mex Pistols are from Eugene. They play a mix of Spaghetti
Western and Mariachi and a lot of it you could polka to. They have
many different types of instruments in their band. They have two
guitarists, a bassist, a guy on drums, one on tympany, another on
the bass drum (like the ones in marching bands), a guy on keyboards,
another on chimes and even another on the accordion. Then, if that
wasn't enough, some of them also switch off with other instruments
like trumpets, trombones and tubas! I really like Los Mex Pistols,
but a lot of their music sounds the same after awhile.
At 11:20, Fishbone came on. Dr. Madd Vibe started the show off with
Optimistic Yes Pessimistic No. And then they played the following songs:
Unyielding Conditioning
The Suffering - This song was slower and had a new intro on it
Everyday Sunshine - This one got the crowd going!
Karma Tsunami - They had to do this one twice since Steward messed it up
Monkey Dick
Bonin' in the Boneyard
I Wish I Had A Date
Lyin' Ass Bitch
Just Allow
Give It Up
Freddie's Dead
Aids & Armageddon
Cholly - Angelo got a bunch of people on the stage for this one...
Where'd You Get Those Pants - ...and then he kicked off all the guys
for this song. There must have been at least 30 girls on stage
Ma & Pa
Alcoholic
Party At Ground Zero - This one was interesting because there were
these two girls on stage dancing. Angelo was trying to get them
to take their clothes off, but they didn't. Although the one girl
tried to take off the other girl's skirt. Anyway, it was interesting.
Now this is the part that bugs me. Party was the last song. EVERYBODY
started leaving! There were a few of us trying to get an encore, but
Fishbone didn't come back out. It was pretty sad on the crowds part.
What really bugged me about it was that Sunless Saturday (along with
Swim and Servitude) was in the encore and I wanted to hear that song
since it's my favorite song! Angelo did two other poems during the
show, but I don't know which ones they were.
The turn out was pretty good. I think that the Roseland maxs out at
around 1000 people and there was about 350-400 people there. A lot of
people were there from the start of the show too. There was a good mix
of ages there also. High schoolers, college students and 30+ were all
in attendance. A lot of people were dancing the whole show too! At some
of the other Fishbone shows I have been to people just stand there, so it
was nice actually seeing people move.
I got to talk to Walt, Angelo, and Spacey T. They said that they hope to
make up those cancelled UK dates at some point. Spacey said that they are
still going to do the college tour with Black Eyed Peas and then do
another tour with Living Colour and Soul Brains!
Anyway, wherever you guys are at, thanks for the excellent show!
Take it easy.
