Despite the terrible sound, Fishbone was on fire. The band is tighter than ever and the current lineup sounds great! Dre Gipson adds a lot to the band with his vocals, dub rap parts, and also took several stage dives into the audience. Angelo was Angelo, dancing like a maniac and himself stage diving several times as well. This is probably the only time I've seen Fishbone where Angelo didn't have a theremin and at times it seemed like he was looking to the place where a theremin normally would be.
Song highlights included Alcoholic where Angelo and Dre both stage dove several times and really got the crowd into it, the speed and tight execution of Frey'd Fuckin' Nerve Endings, a crowd pleasing version of Ma & Pa, and an amazing version of Hide Behind My Glasses. They opened the night with Poem Dance / Instrumental, track #8 from the 2nd disc of Fishbone 101. This is the first time I've ever heard this played live. For the encore, they finished off the night with Servitude, with each member taking a solo at the end and leaving the stage individually.
Only 200 tickets were sold for this show because Social Distortion was the main event playing across the street. The club appeared packed but as the night wore on, the crowd thinned out quite a bit and probably only 30-40% of the people remained by the encore. Still, Fishbone took it to the stage and played hard.
This show would definitely have been a 10/10 if it weren't for the aweful sound.
