The venue wuz easy enough to find, just left of center downtown Columbus oHIGHo. Columbus being a typically conservative Midwest city, tha campuses in town are the only blemishes on an otherwise squeeky clean status quo metropolis.
"So dance if you dare
And escape the nightmare
of the City."
The Brickyard is spacious. As far as club-like venues it's about twice tha size as any I've seen Fishbone play previously.I wandered in 'bout 6:15 and heard sound check goin' on.Spacey wuz tweekin' his rig and Angelo wuz breakin' a sweat on John's kit.I sat in and quaffed a mug of sud.Rapped with Angelo and Spacey a bit.Hopped on tha bus and said hello to Norwood and John.Wood wuz about ta take a pre-show nap.He apologized explainin' they all went out tha night before and caught a Sevendust show.I guess they must of had a real good time with thier day off.I know Walt wuz lovin' it!Comin' from Columbus originally and soakin' up all that Kibby love & hospitality.I werked my way to tha back of tha bus where Keisha and Nerre were loungin'.Seein' those two ladies wuz quite tha shot in tha arm!In a lot of ways tha whole experience wuz as much a reunion as it wuz a Fishbone show.Keisha must of had tha most fun tha night before.Still payin' tha piper she retired to recoup a bit.I wuz a starvin' Marvin so I took a short walk and got hooked up with some sushi. While grubbin' in my vehicamal across tha street from the Brickyard I could hear Angelo beltin' some old school on his monster sax.Later I discovered he wuz puzzlin' out a new tune entitled FACE PLANT.Tha retellin' of a personal snowboardin' experience tha lyrics of wich can be found on tha MadVibe
site. While Angelo wuz a playin' John told'm to keep playin' his sax like he's 'posed ta do and stay tha fuck off his kit.John sure likes ta stir shit up.Of course Angelo is totally innocent.'Bout this time I round a corner and run smack dab into Ryan Gear (5string).I believe he wuz also followin' tha gutteral emissions of Angelo. It wuz great to share tha night with a fellow soldier and list member. Both of us representin' with yellah and gween Nuttwork T's.
Tha two opening acts were very forgetable but in fairness they were competing with tha charming company of Ms. Nerre in tha merchandise booth. My best crowd count would be 'bout maybe 100-120 folks loosely packed.Tha thirty or so near tha stage were a little tighter but not much.I skanked about and pogoed with little contact.Security didn't help tha situation much.Whenever someone got 'too' lively and strayed into someone elses personal space Brickyard security waded through tha crowd to lay hands on tha evildoer. Two guys were expelled from tha premises after being warned.Security entered tha crowd I'd say at least nine times. It wuz distracting and annoying!Overall though itwuz a great show.Energy and execution!Plenty of classic shit wich I love.I had hoped however for a helpin' of Temple Bar material.Just can't seem to git enough! My #1 highlight by far wuz Spacey's dedication of MAGGOT BRAIN to his friend and mentor Eddie Hazel! #2 highlight wuz hearin' SWIM live for tha first time!I know, I know- there are plenty of list members who turn thier noses up at this
Fishbone song.Sure it's silly and mindless.I think that's why I enjoy it.John stepped to tha mic stage front. He announced "Tha pool is now open!".He said he always wearz his swimmin' trunkz.John wanted to know if we had our trunkz on?'Bout this time tha most active security goon got on stage. He leaned against a post stage left, his arms crossed imposingly across his chest, daring tha launch of any flying fish. With a thin crowd and roughneck security what could a soldier do? Defy and fly I say!I didn't do any swimmin' but at least tha crowd
kept me from a faceplant. One or two flyin' fish followed.Of course we were all given stern warnings.SWIM ended tha show.Tha crowd stayed chanting and pounding tha stage but to no avail.Near tha end of a long tour who could blame them.John did reappear givin' and recievin' love with tha crowd. They coaxed him to go for a swim but security pulled him down as soon as they could git to him.Despite security and tha vastness of tha venue, despite partyin' too much tha night before everyone seemed to have a real good time.A rare occasion Ryan wasn't
babysitting recording equip so he got to git his skank on somethin' fierce!Afterwards hangin' in tha bar we chatted with Nerre a bit more. John wuz doin' his usual carousing.Soliciting drinks from tha women folk, teasing Nerre and dominating tha juke box, playin' old classics like tha Stones 'Brown Sugar'.
BTW: John's warning to Angelo 'bout playing on his kit
was totally in jest.Angelo goofs around but he has
much respect and it's obvious that John trusts'm.
